A Family Reunion with Grandma
A short video is presented on Guggenheim's website as part of the UBS MAP Global Art Initiative.
Artist Navin Rawanchaikul, whose epic painting Places of Rebirth is featured in "No Country: Contemporary Art for South and Southeast Asia", takes part in a family reunion in Chiang Mai. His 88 year-old grandmother cooks a special dessert, which for Navin recalls the memory of his late mother. The grandmother recounts the family's post-partition journey from their homeland of Punjab (now Pakistan) to their "place of rebirth" in Thailand. Pouring over old photos, she discusses the family's roots and their arrival in Bangkok, and describes her idea of "home."
